Information and Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

With very few exceptions, church pews will last forever if taken care of. Unfortunately, the foam padding deteriorates and our tastes for fabric colors change over the years. Church pew upholstery or re-upholstery is a great way to extend the life of those beautiful pews for about 1/4 the cost of new pews.

Chances are you have visited this page because you have been given the assignment by your congregation to

“find someone for the pews!”

You are in good company if you had no idea where to start, and simply looked to Google for assistance. It’s not like there’s a church pew upholstery company on every corner, like Walgreen’s, right? None the less, here you are and we would like to help with your project.

Below we walk you through many of the questions that arise in this process. If you don’t care for reading or surfing the web, just call us any time and we can answer any questions you may have.

WHERE DO YOU DO THE WORK?

Many jobs can be done on site, but here at Woods Church Interiors, we strive to do the VERY BEST WORK and what is best for the customer’s individual situation. To that end, we offer both on-site upholstery as well as factory upholstery.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

We work pretty efficiently. This answer is not as easy as it may seem. Many church pew upholstery jobs involve pews that are fully upholstered. Seat, back, and outside back. For these pews we do about 500 linear feet per week with our standard crew. If your pews have less upholstery, then the job will go a bit faster. If your church is larger than 500 feet, we will either bring a larger crew or spread the work over a couple weeks. Weekend services will not be interrupted, as we will completely finish sections each week. If you check out our gallery of installation photos, we typically say how long each job took. That can give you an idea to start. When we quote your job we can tell you how long we expect to be there as well.

WILL THERE BE A BIG MESS?

If we have to remove old fabric and foam there will be some mess, mostly foam dust from the deteriorated old foam. The good news is though, that we clean it all up! We bring shop vac, regular vac, dusting cloths, etc. When we walk out after finishing your church pew upholstery, your church will be ready for worship. We will walk through with you at the end and make sure everything is nice and tidy.

SHOULD WE REPLACE OUR PEW PADDING OR JUST THE FABRIC?

Almost Always….the only exception is if there is a fabric failure within the first 5 years you’ve owned your pews… So don’t let a salesman tell you that you should upholster over the old fabric and foam. Foam has a lifespan and should be replaced when you re-upholster your pews. These guys that push you to leave the old foam charge more than we charge to replace it all, even though they are only doing half the work. If you have had the pews long enough to want new upholstery, you definitely need new foam. In my opinion, if a salesman advised me to leave the old foam and recover with new fabric, I would not allow him to go any further with my church’s pews. They don’t know what they are doing and you will end with a sub par church pew upholstery.

HOW MUCH DOES CHURCH PEW UPHOLSTERY COST?

Keep in mind that this is general information. The cost of your church pew upholstery job is a combination of many factors. The biggest factor in formulating a quote for your job is how much of your pew is upholstered. In order to give you an accurate quote, we will need some specific information from you. We can typically generate a quote within minutes once you provide us with a few simple facts about your pews. We also can set up a time to come out and measure for you and so an onsite evaluation and quote.

ONCE WE ORDER, HOW LONG UNTIL YOU DO THE JOB?

There are 2 main factors that determine how soon we can do your church pew upholstery. How busy we are and the availability of the fabric you choose. There are some fabrics that take 6 to 8 weeks to get, but most we can get within 5 weeks and some we can get tomorrow. We schedule our jobs according to church need and in the order in which we receive your contract. We have multiple crews so most weeks we do 4-6  jobs. If your job is smaller, we can usually work you in the latter part of a week even if we already have a job scheduled. A good rule of thumb though, is order early if you have a special occasion coming up.

UPHOLSTER FIRST OR REPLACE CARPET FIRST?

In our opinion, pews come first. The simple reason is foam dust. The old foam in your pews has deteriorated, and although we will vacuum it all up, why do that to your new carpet? Schedule us to come the week before your carpet. We won’t be late and mess things up. We take pride in our scheduling! Once we clean out, the carpet installers can un-anchor the pews and move them around for their install. If you do it the opposite, everything will still be fine, but this makes sense to us.
